- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mike Reads Books -- A lot of fun! : I read this in a day - which, I don't read a ton of middle grade, so take that for what it's worth -- but I loved this. It's just so much fun with all the folklore and just enough of the spooky. But most of all...this book is written for tweens and young teens, but it's done in that awesome way that some things that are "for kids" do where you find yourself, as an adult, laughing right along...and maybe not at the same spots the kids do, because it works on multiple levels. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Belle’s Middle Grade -- Great read! : This was such a great book! I really enjoyed it! Definitely the perfect October/Halloween read! It’s not only set at Halloween time, but the whole story is just full of spooky goodness! We also have a MG cat-well 8, but 1 main cool cat named Chunk. Yes Chunk. This made my 80’s baby heart so happy-all 8 cats are named after characters from THE GOONIES!! So awesome!! Chunk the cat was so great lol I love that cat. I adored Babette! Such amazing amazing character! Syd was such an amazing best friend for Lucely. I absolutely loved the friendship dynamic b/n them. Lucely was such a great main character. She was strong, brave, smart, loyal, & determined. She loves her dad & family so much, & is determined to help everyone. Things take a turn, & w/the help of Syd, Babette, & Chunk she is on a race to fix everything before/by Halloween. I loved the firefly aspect as well. Them being the spirits of family members passed, & the whole back story of that was so interesting. As was the backstory of the witches, & where they live. Everything was described so good that I got all the spooky vibes in each situation. Such a great spooky adventure. I loved the Kid Ghostbusters vibe I got too lol loved this. Babette, Syd's 𝘢𝘣𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘢 (grandmother) is a real witch, on the side of good, and comes to the girls' rescue along with one of her many cats. Chunk is as large as her name implies and smarter than the average cat. You'll have to read the book to find out how their adventure ends. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Utopia State of Mind -- ADORE - one of my favorite middle grades this year : Ghost Squad is a precious middle grade about family, ghost hunting, and friendship. I loved the friendship between Lucely and Syd - their easy banter, the ways Syd is a fabulous inventor, and their support of each other. Reading midddle grades with supportive best friends is one of the things that warms my heart! At the same time, Lucely is driven by her love of her family, living and dead. Her quest to help her relatives, as well as her father, is endearing and utterly relatable. She wants so badly to be able to save her family. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020 )
