The Hound of the Baskervilles: 150th Anniversary Edition (Signet Classics) Customer Reviews
:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Danielle N. Hart -- Mysterious Press version only - NOT missing the manuscript section : This review applies to the Kindle version of the book available from MysteriousPress.com/Otto Penzler editions. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2016 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Frandano -- An Agreeable Afternoon with Holmes and Watson, Yet... : ...setting aside its place in the history of detective fiction, my opinion of this short novel is that it's only good, not great. The Hound of the Baskervilles rips along and is generally well put together, holding the attention of contemporary readers, but is no longer capable of conveying the fear and sense of dread by which Victorian readers, and many Conan Doyle worshippers since, were gripped. Moreover, I'll surmise that, apart from the most resolute Sherlockeans, readers nowadays will find the exertions and plots of the principal malefactors to be implausible, if not absurd, and the conclusion weak. Although Conan Doyle does not build the villain up to the dimensions of a criminal genius akin to his Moriarty, we are supposed to believe the criminal mind at work in this novel stimulates Holmes' investigative juices to a peak, with the sleuth twice remarking that "this time we have got a foeman who is worthy of our steel," and 100 pages later repeating the comment with an "I tell you now again." These manly, playing-fields-of-Eton enthusiasms in the end did not, however, seem to me validated. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kenya Starflight -- A well-known Holmes story that's still nicely chilling and enjoyable : Sherlock Holmes has so thoroughly permeated the literary and pop-culture worlds that it's possible to be very familiar with the fictional man, the stories dedicated to him, and the tropes ascribed to him without ever having read one of his actual stories. And for a long time I was one of those people -- I knew plenty about Sherlock and even knew the basics of the plot to "Hound of the Baskervilles" (thanks, Wishbone), but had never actually read a Holmes story. "Hound of the Baskervilles" is my first Sherlock Holmes story, and while I already knew the basics of the plot, it was nice to read the original, and it was nicely suspenseful and full of twists. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sofia Petrovna -- Big, black hound that hunts souls in the marsh : When it comes to Sherlock's adventures, I consider this to be the most complete one. It has absolutely everything a good story needs: a mystery, family curse, tragic love, action, a runaway convict, and a dog. Big, black hound that hunts souls in the marsh. Except that Sherlock doesn't believe in ghosts, and there is something really awkward in the entire situation. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from James Wheeler -- Great story but beware the explanatory notes : I absolutely loved this story. Dartmoor is a great setting for a murder mystery. The descriptions of strange happenings on foggy days and dark nights really get the imagination flowing. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- Always Popular : The cover on this Wisehouse Classics edition looks like it could be a copy of the very first edition which is a bit of a bonus compared to some covers that crop up on older books in the kindle catalogue. This was first printed in book form in 1902 after it had been serialised in The Strand Magazine. This has always been very popular ever since its first publication and has remained so up to this day, where many people believe it to be quite correctly, one of the best of the Holmes tales. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from adrian b -- Conan Doyle was clearly more intersted in playing cricket than writing this story. : If you're looking for intrigue, cliff-hangers, suspense, thrill of the chase your not going to find it in this book!! It's another case of the screenwriter's craft in taking the bones of a story and making something artful and intelligent out of it. I refer of course to Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone in their portrayals of the super sleuth. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Moseley -- Good luck with trying to put it down : The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the few Sherlock Holmes mysteries published in book form (A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four being the others). The majority of Holmes stories were originally published in periodicals and Christmas annuals as short stories and have remained so. Perhaps the discipline of writing short format narrative is what helps give this particular story its superb pacing and suspense. It is an over-used cliché, but you simply cannot put it down. From the moment the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville and the presence of a gigantic, ghoulish hound are revealed, the narrative whisks the reader breathlessly off in pursuit of the truth out on the atmospheric and brooding Dartmoor. Although clearly of the detective fiction genre in its own right, The Hound of the Baskervilles also shares much in common with the sensation fiction of Wilkie Collins and the gothic horror of Bram Stoker and Robert Louis Stevenson with a phantasmic, netherworldly fiend striking terror and death in the heart of the Victorian household.
